Objective: 

For participants to spell a word using the hopscotch grid.
Other Skills: Coordination

Equipment: 

Chalk
Pebble or coin (to throw into hopscotch grid)

Set Up: 

Divide participants into groups of 2-4.
Create a hopscotch grid for each group.
It can be a simple grid, or make it more difficult (see attached document for examples).
Write a letter in each square and be sure different words can be spelt using the letters (see attached document for examples).
Each group or each participant should have a pebble or coin.

Step by Step: 
  1. After the hopscotch grids are set up, explain the instructions to the participants.
  2. The rules are like a normal game of hopscotch, where you have to throw the pebble or coin onto the desired square, and hop through the grid (1 foot hop for single square, and 2 foot hop for squares next to each other), but not on the square where the pebble or coin is located. When jumping back through the grid, they will stop before the square with the pebble, bend down and pick it up and continue hoping until they reach the end.
  3. However, instead of throwing the pebble from one number to the next, participants will throw the pebble to spell a word.
  4. They will decide on a word, and throw the pebble to the first letter and jump through.
  5. Next, they will try to throw it to the second letter of their word.
  6. If they miss the letter they want and get another one, they can try to think of a new word to use with those letters (but it has to go in order!).
  7. If they spell a word with 2 letters, they get 2 points, 3 letters and they get 3 points and so on.
  8. If they miss a letter, jump outside the lines, jump with two feet instead of one, then they get 0 points for that round. 
  9. Continue until a participant gets a certain amount of points, or for a certain number of rounds.
  10. Participants cannot spell the same word as other participants. 
Safety Considerations: 

Remove any safety hazards and obstacles from the play area.
Ensure the squares drawn are a good size and for the participants.
Remind participants to be aware of their surroundings and to keep their head up.

Variations: 

Have a list of words available for participants to use.
Participants can spell a word out of order.
Instead of letters, have numbers and participants are given a mathematical equation (540+242), and they must throw the pebbles to get the answer. So in this case they would throw the pebble to '7' first, then '8' then '2' because the answer is 782.
If indoors, use hoops or tape to create the hopscotch grid.
