YMCAs in the province historically have not thought of themselves as part of the formal recreation delivery system. YMCAs contribute to physical literacy with a couple of entry points: licensed child care curriculum requires daily physical activity, and child/youth physical activity programs outside licensed child care fall within the Active Start and FUNdamental stages of development. At the other end of the continuum, YMCAs offer programs and services that ensure adults can remain active for life. The presenters demonstrate how the YMCA of Cape Breton achieves the above, and describe opportunities to partner with YMCAs in Nova Scotia for the delivery of physical activity and sport programs that are consistent with Canadian Sport For Life principles of development.
