Free online course. Section One -15 minutes. Section Two - 2 hours.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is gaining traction in Canada and Calgary AfterSchool (CAS) has created a free online course for afterschool service providers who are interested in learning about SEL and to raise awareness of SEL and how it can be used to enhance AfterSchool programs. The course was developed by the CAS team under the guidance of Dr. Shelley Hymel, a professor in the Faculty of Education at University of British Columbia (UBC) and UBC Masters Students Sarah Joosse and Miriam Miller (subject matter experts in the field of Social and Emotional Learning).

The goal of this training course is to improve knowledge and help in developing skills of staff involved in the delivery of afterschool programs, so they can prepare and organize  in the delivery of “SAFE” (sequenced, active, focused and explicit) children and youth programming.

The course is split into two sections:

  1. “What is SEL”  - approximately 15 minutes long.
  2. “How to do SEL” - approximately 2 hrs long.

On completion of Section Two, participants must complete an online survey in order to receive their certificates of completion.
